Making Your Own Drum Lampshade is a Piece of Cake!

Making Your Own Drum Lampshade is a Piece of Cake!

Building your own lampshade is a lot easier than you might expect, and when you DIY you can make a shade in any color, size and pattern that you like.

You can make a lampshade for a table lamp, floor lamp, and even a pendant light fixture for your ceiling.

It just takes a little bit of creativity, some lampshade-making materials, and an hour of your time to make a totally custom, unique drum lamp shade that you can be proud of.

Before Starting Your Lampshade Project

1. Determine the Size of Lampshade That You'll Need

First, you need to decide the dimensions of your drum lampshade. How tall do you want it to be? This will be the height of your shade. How wide do you want it to be? This is the diameter of the shade. If you're still not sure exactly what size of a lampshade you want to make, read our tutorial on how to measure your lamp to find the perfect-sized lampshade first

2. Choose Your Lampshade Material

For beginners, we’ve found that the best material to use is plain cotton. It sticks well to the adhesive styrene, as well as the lampshade glue.

But if you want to get more creative, there are plenty of other interesting fabrics and materials you can make a lampshade with! Some of our favorites include wood veneer, fancy papers and tactile materials.

Get creative with your fabric! These lampshades were all made using our kit:

SO HOW DOES THIS WORK?

2. Purchase DIY Lampshade Making Supplies

The height and diameter dimensions that you choose will determine the size of materials that you need. The main components being adhesive styrene (also known as pressure-sensitive styrene) and steel lampshade rings.  You’ll also need some other odds and ends including binder clips or wooden clothespins, a wooden molding stick or other spreading instrument, and some tacky lampshade glue.

To choose your lampshade rings, simply select rings that match your chosen diameter. If you want your shade to be 10” wide, choose rings with a 10” diameter. We currently offer the standard US Style Spider - Washer rings. (We'll soon be adding Euro / Uno style rings to our collection, so stay tuned!)

CHOOSING THE CORRECT SIZE OF ADHESIVE STYRENE

So there's a bit of math involved here. There are 2 dimensions of the styrene sheets to consider: height and length. The height is simply the height that you wish your lampshade to be. The length can be calculated using this formula:

Styrene Length = Lampshade Ring Diameter X pi (3.14) + 1 Additional Inch for Overlap

For example, if your lampshade diameter needs to be 10”, your adhesive styrene should be 32" long (=10 x 3.14 +1 = 32.4, rounded down to 32")

WE SELL 3 DIFFERENT LENGTHS OF STYRENE:

  • 40” - for DIY lampshades that are 12” or less in diameter

  • 64” for DIY lampshades which are 18” or less in diameter

  • 180” for very large lampshades, and the hard core DIY lampshade enthusiast!

3. Gather Up Your Tools & Purchase Your Supplies

You likely already have all the tools you need for making a lampshade:

  • Iron + ironing surface
  • Scissors
  • Small paintbrush or other glue-spreading utensil
  • Ruler or measuring tape

A rotary cutter and a cutting mat will make the process easier, but are not completely necessary. They’ll help you trim down your lampshade fabric and styrene more quickly and accurately, but most people do just fine with regular old scissors.

Here are all of the material supplies required for making your custom lampshade:

  • Adhesive styrene
  • Top and bottom lampshade rings
  • Tacky lampshade glue
  • Wooden molding stick
  • Binder clips
  • Your own fabric or other material to cover your finished lampshade for a unique look

Determining the Size of Styrene and Lampshade Rings You Need:

So you've already visited our lampshade sizing page and have determined the final size of lampshade that you want to make.  Now it's time to determine what length and height of styrene you need, as well as what diameter of rings you need.

To choose your styrene, you'll need to consider these 2 dimensions: height and length. The height is simply the height that you wish your lampshade to be. The length can be calculated using this easy-as-pie formula:

Styrene Length = Lampshade Ring Diameter x pi (3.14) + 1 Additional Inch for Overlap

For example, if your lampshade diameter is going to be 10", your adhesive styrene should be 32" long (= 10 x 3.14 +1 = 32.4, rounded down to 32"). In this case, you would buy our 40" Styrene sheet and cut it down to 32".

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What happened to the lampshade kits?

We still sell all of the same lampshade making supplies that we used to. In the past, we sold them in all-in-one kits that included all of the materials in a single box presentation. We've since decided to deconstruct the kit and offer each piece individually. This way, you're free to mix & match so you get the exact size components that will work best for you, instead of adhering to the height and diameter dimensions that we had previously decided on. Not offering all of the supplies in a kit format gives you even more freedom to make a unique lampshade that you'll love.

How can I make a lampshade in a different shape to a drum/cylinder?

Though drum lampshades are the simplest shape to start with, it is possible to make a tapered lampshade using a similar technique and the same materials. Here are links to some tutorials on making tapered lampshades, and panel style lampshades.
