To help inspire and get you in your DIY mood, we browsed all of 2017’s interior decor trends to bring forward some of the best and most creative. DIY crafters you are going to love these nine eye-catching 2017 lighting trends!

1. Industrial Lighting

This is one of our favorite trends ever for lighting and DIY lamps in 2017. It looks beautiful, it matches so many decors, from urban, to farmhouse and even contemporary, not to mention it’s a great way to recycle. The rugged, unfinished look of the raw materials used in creating an industrial lamp or lighting fixture will draw the attention without stealing the entire show. You’ve probably already seen a lot of industrial design elements around you, since it’s one trend that’s been constantly growing lately and expanding from modern homes to bar and coffee shops all over the world.

  • Reclaimed wood combined with metal
  • Neutral tones
  • Stainless steel (for a polished look)

2. Edison Bulbs

These are the soft spot of any lamp lover and we believe you can never have enough lamps with these beauties. We couldn’t be happier to see this lighting trend carrying on in 2017. Edison bulbs are the go-to DIY idea when you’re looking to add a retro/vintage look to a lamp and, it’s one choice that works so nicely with any kind of decor and design! These light bulbs come in a variety of shapes and sizes making it super easy for a DIY lamp crafter to customize their project. 3. Geometric Lighting

We’ve seen all kinds of geometric light fixtures lately and we believe these are here to stay, as there’s a global trend towards minimalist in decor for modern homes and commercial spaces. The goal is to reduce the clutter by switching to elements with softer, cleaner lines, while still making a dramatic impression.

What we love most about using geometric features in lighting design is that there are infinite possibilities of incorporating it into your home decor. And that’s definitely something DIY lamp crafters and lighting designers should take into account.

You can create a new lamp to love forever in whatever shape you’d like: spherical, hexagonal, rectangular, cylindrical and it will look gorgeous in every area of your home. Oh and let’s not forget, this lighting trend is an easy DIY project to take on. All you have to do is either use a geometric vase as a base for a new lamp, make a caged pendant lamp, or, our favorite, just take down the fabric on an old panel lampshade and you’ve got yourself a cool trendy lighting fixture to show off to your guests.

4. Minimalist Lighting Design

This trend took over the world of interior design lately and we love it. It works with any of the other trends above and below, it’s very easy to achieve for DIY lamp makers and the end results are always eye-candy. The rule here is “less is more” and the aim is to cut off the clutter to expose the lean lines. What’s very interesting about the minimalist lighting trend is that although the fixture doesn’t feature numerous elements, it will nonetheless look dynamic.

Home designers have indicated that in 2017, the minimalist lighting trend is seeing a specific niche. Thanks to technology, minimalist LED lighting have become a popular choice for modern homes and commercial spaces. However, if you’re not into LEDs there are still so many ways to make a DIY minimalist lighting fixture for your home. Check out these ideas:

5. Gold Lighting Fixtures

Interior designers believe the 2017 trend of the color gold is here to stay for many - many years. A spokesperson for Gates Interior Design believes “Gold isn’t going anywhere. In fact it bigger than ever. Silver is out. The trend will last 7-10 years so starting investing in the color.”

The first thing that comes to mind when you think gold, could be opulence. However, if you combine gold with the minimalistic trend, you’ll be getting gorgeous lighting fixtures for a wide number of spaces: your home, office, restaurant and so much more. Anyway, this color is very versatile so gold-coloured lighting fixtures can be bold, stunning, elegant, minimalist, complex, and they would still look gorgeous. The great thing about gold is that it is easy to mix and match with other metals, colors, and patterns.

What we love most about this 2017 lighting trend is the fact that a gold lamp will add warmth and a unique touch to your home decor and… it’s an easy DIY project to take on. There are countless brands of gold spray or acrylic paints that can help you completely transform an object. Here are some beautiful ideas to get you into your DIY mode.

6. Organic Textures

You’ve probably already seen this trend slowly taking over Pinterest. Natural elements and textures are taking over the interior design world. We’ve seen it in marble coffee tables and kitchen counter tops at Bernhardt and Get a Room Design, but we’ve also seen this trend at lighting designers. Organic materials with beautiful natural textures look amazing and when it comes to stones like marble, we can only imagine the luxurious and soft experience of touching it.

Using materials like marble in interior design used to be all about extravagance and highly elaborate sculptures. Not anymore. Remember how we said the minimalist trend is ever more popular? Just check out our selection below for some fabulous minimalist marble lamps. We expanded our range of choice to also include coral lamps. They might not be as luxurious to touch as alabaster, but they look amazing.

Finally, there is a catch to using materials like marble or corals to make a new lamp. These materials are hard to work with and can retail for a steep price tag. However, if you’re the DIY fan, you can still achieve that organic texture look for your lamp. For a lampshade, you can use a marble fabric print and for a base, you can get the look for less, with paper marbling.

7. Using Concrete in Lighting Designs

The first time I saw a DIY video tutorial on how to use concrete to create new home decor items, I fell in love. I immediately started to brainstorm for ways to expand my workshop to include a space where I could only work with concrete. The rustic, rough edges and the gray touch are irresistible, not to mention how easy it is to make custom items using this technique. It’s also one of the newest trends in lighting design and it’s one that completely changes the way we think of concrete.

Until recently, in my mind cement and concrete had nothing to do with the delicate world of lighting. Such a heavy mixture of materials would be impossible to use in lighting design. Well, below you will find proof that concrete makes a gorgeous, minimalist choice for DIY lights.

8. Terracotta in Lighting Design

There’s something oddly fascinating about terracotta. Perhaps it’s the warm color of this material or maybe the retro feeling that hits close to home. From the looks of it, it’s not just me. In 2017, terracotta is making a comeback as a top interior design trend and it’s both the color and the material itself that have been getting a lot of attention lately.

Terracotta is a material that’s been widely used in interiors decors inspired by traditional Mediterranean homes and is appreciated for its capability to absorb less heat than other materials. Undoubtedly, there is some exotic appearance to this material. Combine that with terracotta’s unique texture and earthy color and you’ve got a versatile material that can be molded into any shape, it’s durable and expresses warmth, casual elegance and naturalness.

When it comes to using terracotta in a DIY lamp project, there are several ways to do it. You can go to your local gardening shop and invest in terracotta flower pots. These should have a hole at the bottom. This allows you to pass electric wiring through the base without the risk of cracking the bottom. Works beautifully both as a lamp base and as a lamp pendant. Another way to achieve the terracotta look for your DIY lamp is to paint the lampshade or the base in an earthy hue of red or orange. The best way to achieve the original look is to mold your own terracotta objects and then use them in your projects.

9. Pantone’s color of the year 2017: Greenery

If you’re the kind that loves to stay on top of new trends, then the safest way to go is to follow Pantone’s yearly color announcements. In 2017, Pantone’s color of the year is Greenery, “the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature” as Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, told The New York Times.

Pantone’s 2017 color of the year matches well with some of the other lighting trends we’ve noted above, like the gold, the organic textures, the terracotta and of course, minimalism. Greenery is a color that combines very well with elements of these trends as it expresses naturalness, warmth, and delicacy. It’s a color that works well with warm wood tones as well as with different types of materials and textures. Pantone refers to this color as nature’s neutral which makes it compatible with many color combinations and palettes, from neutrals to brights, deeper shades, pastels, and metallics.
