How to Attach a Lampshade to a Pendant Light Fitting
October 28, 2013
Some people have asked if it’s possible to install their custom drum lampshade onto a pendant light kit so it can hang from the ceiling. There are three answers to this question - yes, oui & sí! All you need to do is disassemble a standard pendant light kit so the lampshade can be attached. See my video tutorial on this project below.
The lampshade featured in this tutorial was created using one of my DIY lampshade kits. These kits have what’s called a 'spider' ring. Most lampshades in the US utilize a spider ring, which is handy because your pendant light kit cord can be thread through the spider ring very easily.
The pendant light kit used in the above tutorial is a basic kit from Westinghouse. You can get pendant light kits from hardware stores like Home Depot or homeware stores like West Elm, and they all work roughly the same way. I used this mini pendant light kit from Amazon.
After acquiring the pendant light kit of your choice, dis-assemble the ceiling mount so you can thread the cord through the top of the lampshade. Depending on the kit, you might also need to disassemble part of the socket so the lampshade hangs securely. Then simply re-assemble the ceiling mount and any other attachments.
And that’s it! The pendant light is now ready to be installed onto a ceiling. Get help from a professional if you're not familiar with electrical wiring. Create your own pendant lampshade with custom lampshade supplies available right here at the I Like That Lamp shop.
